Chapter 24 Summary: Methods for Calculating and Measuring Impedance This chapter discusses the design and measurement of transmission lines in the four major types of PCBs. Tradeoffs between stripline and microstrip are investigated, as well as the decision to us buried vs. surface lines. The pros and cons of Maxwell’s Equations are detailed – they are free, but work accurately only over a limited range, leaving some users of equations to resort to trial-and-error methods. The reader will also learn why 2D field solvers may provide the most accurate impedance calculations of all.
